They could also drive you mad (excuse the pun)! They really could, that&#8217;s why I focus on the amusing side of it all to keep my sanity! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating and sharing &#8220;I don&#8217;t always drive in Kathmandu, but when I do&#8230;&#8221; memes featuring the former Most Interesting Man in the World is one of those efforts, reproduced here for your pleasure!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-1.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-1-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There are <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/horn-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no rules<\/a> on the streets of Kathmandu. <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/the-waiting-place-no-thats-not-for-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Driving down the wrong side of the road<\/a>, to avoid a traffic jam, for instance, is normal!<br> But I do follow pretty much all traffic rules, having driven in countries where a majority of drivers and pedestrians do. That has also meant suffering the wrath of fellow drivers &#8212; they honk at me whenever I stop before a zebra crossing to allow pedestrians to cross safely, for example! Most drivers in Kathmandu don&#8217;t, and worse, <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/on-the-road-not-taken-before-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honk at them <\/a> to tell them to yield, <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/to-yield-or-not-to-yield-that-isnt-the-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making pedestrians suffer unnecessarily<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-2.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-2-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From around the end of the summer of 2007 to the beginning of the summer of 2011, when I was living abroad but returned to the country regularly for visits, I didn&#8217;t drive in Kathmandu at all. Most drivers on the streets of Kathmandu, and elsewhere, drive really really <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/close-encounter-of-the-unnerving-and-sobering-kind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aggressively<\/a>, NOT defensively, as one should.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-3.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-3-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">That reflects the attitude &#8212; and behavior &#8212; of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/on-the-road-not-taken-before-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ubiquitous and reckless vehicles<\/a> in the country. It&#8217;s normal to see motor-bikers zooming around &#8212; even on highways &#8212; with pillion riders, some little children, <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/use-your-head-protect-your-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">without a helmet<\/a>. Most other drivers, however, use it completely differently. For how horn rules the streets of the city and what horn rules are, <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/horn-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a>. Drivers in Kathmandu also lay on their horns when in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/the-best-i-have-heard-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traffic jam to unjam it<\/a>, which I don&#8217;t do, of course!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-6.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-6.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-6-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">For a people who see time as <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/travel-ins-and-outs-of-daily-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fluid and circular, instead of fixed and linear<\/a>, and for a people who generally display a remarkable level of patience in most other contexts and situations, on the streets of Kathmandu, they are <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/in-a-hurry-to-be-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">always in a hurry&#8230;to be late<\/a>! I, on the other hand, always drive leisurely, taking my time, like I have nowhere I HAVE to be, and still make it to my destination on time&#8230;most of the time anyway!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-7.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-7.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-7-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To the driver in me, pedestrians are the most vulnerable on the streets, and so I pay the utmost attention to their needs and accommodate them. Most other drivers on the streets of Kathmandu, however, view pedestrians, even those ON a crosswalk (zebra crossing), as <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/to-yield-or-not-to-yield-that-isnt-the-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;competitors&#8221;<\/a>!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-8.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-8.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/I-dont-always-drive-in-KTM-8-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yes, I use hand gestures to communicate with fellow drivers in Kathmandu! I don&#8217;t ever remember giving the finger to one in Nepal though! I do sometimes use the Italian hand gesture of disapproval, mind you more out of frustration than to communicate with the other driver.
