As a matter of fact, I have seen this regularly on the streets of Kathmandu! Of course, this shouldn&#8217;t be happening and this is the first reason behind my fear!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ambulance...Stuck in Traffic...in Kathmandu\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GVW3E2nF2ls?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(Incidentally, the ambulance was able to move soon after I stopped recording.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic in Kathmandu is indeed <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/to-yield-or-not-to-yield-that-isnt-the-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atrocious<\/a> (as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/i-dont-always-drive-in-kathmandu-but-when-i-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amusing and bewildering<\/a>). The journalist exposed this practice by going undercover, pretending to be an ambulance driver and calling hospitals and recording the negotiations! The fee depends on the illness or injuries of the patients, some fetching more than others!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigative journalist, Pramod Acharya, who exposed this nefarius practice, is no other than the one who also exposed the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/fake-fake-fake-fake-fake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intellectual bankruptcy<\/a> of the two biggest universities in the country!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nepalitimes.com\/article\/from-nepali-press\/Pay-on-delivery,1423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here<\/a> for the original article exposing the practice, published in 2014. He did <a href=\"http:\/\/nepalitimes.com\/article\/from-nepali-press\/pay-per-patient,278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a follow up<\/a> in 2016 and discovered NOTHING had changed, nothing appeared to have happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">What DID happen was the editor of the publication lost his job over the article!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/investigative-report-cost-editors-job.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"306\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/investigative-report-cost-editors-job.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/investigative-report-cost-editors-job.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/investigative-report-cost-editors-job-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out, some people involved in the medical fraternity can mess with the lives of sick people, but you can&#8217;t mess with the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/the-good-the-bad-and-the-untouchables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;medical mafia&#8221;<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In parts of rural Nepal, even basic medical facilities don&#8217;t exist. What does exist might be really far away. And because of that, patients succumbing to their illness or injuries owing to not receiving medical help on time is not unheard of.
