The very first red flag is the organization\u2019s name itself: “Federation of International Journalist<\/strong>” (singular). This is not a simple typo; it is a foundational grammatical error<\/strong> for an organization claiming global reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the organization’s website<\/a> offers no evidence of what this “Federation<\/strong>” actually federates; few, if any, other organizations appear to belong to it\u2014a fundamental requirement for a body that claims to serve as the “International Headquarters”–even while proclaiming itself as “global organization of journalists and media professionals.” To top it off, the supposed “International” organization uses a generic Gmail address for its official correspondence! Unsurprisingly, all but one of the members are men. But the lack of diversity runs much deeper, undermining any claim the organization has to be a legitimate voice for even Nepal<\/strong>, let alone the “international” community of journalists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a “Federation of International Journalist,” the organization is not at all international. While its officers maybe all American of Nepali heritage and\/or Green Card holders, this homogeneity is stark: apart from five individuals, all are Bahun\/Brahmin. Furthermore, an overwhelming 91%<\/strong> (twenty-two out of twenty-four) of the officers are Hill, so-called high-caste Hindu (Khas-arya<\/strong>) men\u2014a group that constitutes only about 31% of Nepal\u2019s population. Based on the identity of its officers, this is clearly a caste organization, not even a national one (“Nepal Chapter”), let alone an international one.<\/strong> In that way, it is not much different from the genuine IFJ-affiliated Federation of Nepali Journalists<\/a> (FNJ) based in Nepal, which has faced similar criticisms regarding representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crucially, the organization was only registered in 2024<\/strong>, according to the EIN on its own press release, confirming it has virtually no history or professional track record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A basic search confirms this organization is not<\/strong> affiliated with the genuine, globally recognized body, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)<\/a><\/strong>\u2014note the essential plural form\u2014headquartered in Belgium. The notion of a “Nepal chapter” of IFJ<\/strong> in the United States is, in itself, nonsensical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evidence is overwhelming: Dahal’s organization is a self-serving entity that chose its misleading name to give its work weight it does not possess. This is underscored by the fact that the FIJA press release<\/a> is largely a rehash of Dahal’s own<\/em> earlier personal message<\/a> published on the organization’s website in his capacity as the “Founding General Secretary.” What is truly ironic and pathetic is that FIJA came out championing “freedom of the press” in support of one of their own\u2014a purveyor of misinformation and, crucially, an active monarchist.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ideological alignment is deeply significant. Dahal, even as a resident of the United States, appears to be a staunch supporter of the hill so-called high-caste Hindu Monarchy in Nepal, campaigning for its reinstatement in some form. The monarchy he champions is the very same institution that, just twenty years ago, staged a coup, jailed democratically elected officials, and curtailed many fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press.<\/strong> Furthermore, this institution played a crucial role in the 250-year casteist history of the country. It institutionalized and deliberately entrenched structural discrimination and systemic casteism<\/a>\u2014from which Nepal still struggles to recover<\/a>. Historically, the institution has always been associated with curtailing rights and freedoms, including the very freedom of the press that Dahal and his Khas-arya-dominated organization ostensibly champions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
