Eleven was arrived at by assuming 50% men. Census says we, men, are actually slightly less! Twelve was arrived at by assuming the percentage of Khas men of 30 or over to be the same as the percentage of men of that age group in the general population. One more assumption I made was that everyone holding those positions were 30 or older. (The age data for males is to be found on table 15, pp 50-52, of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cbs.gov.np\/image\/data\/Population\/National%20Report\/National%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2011 Census Report<\/a>.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information educates and empowers people to make informed decisions; there is no doubt about that. With that in mind, I shared one of the early versions of the above chart on my Facebook timeline on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10153633716202095&amp;set=a.10151204566697095.508097.573602094&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 28<\/a> and then on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10153675725882095&amp;set=pb.573602094.-2207520000.1446508073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 23<\/a> the version that appears above. And on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10153681122717095&amp;set=pb.573602094.-2207520000.1446514777.&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 26<\/a>, yet another version of the chart, breaking down the composition into Bahun, Chhetri and others. Some of the responses were surprising, not only for their content but also for who they appeared to come from, and a couple of reactions were interesting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you not familiar with the Nepalese social system, Nepalese are divided into &#8212; depending on the source &#8212; four or <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/universidad-iberoamericana-human-rights-education-of-the-marginalized-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five castes<\/a>. The division was carried out by the High Castes. The High Castes &#8212; the top two castes &#8212; are Brahmin (Bahuns) and Chhetri, respectively, and together they are referred to as the <em>Khas<\/em> people. The rest of the Nepalese slot into the other lower castes. (I devote a whole <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/category\/social-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">series of posts<\/a> to the caste system.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s Education, Stupid!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the comments attempting to &#8220;explain&#8221; the disproportionate representation had something to do with (the higher level of?) education of the High Castes compared to the rest. I guess those people aren&#8217;t educated enough to know\/understand the educational value of information!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">What&#8217;s more, those people don&#8217;t themselves seem to be &#8220;educated&#8221; enough to see beyond that. In a Facebook post about statistics breaking down Chief District Officers by caste, someone accused me of <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/blinding-effect-of-structural-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;inciting inter-caste hatred&#8221; and another stated that &#8220;taking such stats leads to racism.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And the Condescension<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The guy who posted the comments reproduced above, repeated over and over again how he and his generation didn&#8217;t believe in the caste system and how they don&#8217;t subscribe to the system etc. What was more telling was his patronizing attitude towards me, as you can see below, which I pointed out kind of sarcastically but he missed it completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-9-Gurung-kids-to-succeed-response-e1446858221815.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-9-Gurung-kids-to-succeed-response-e1446858221815.png\" alt=\"UN 9 Gurung kids to succeed &amp; response\" class=\"wp-image-6668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-9-Gurung-kids-to-succeed-response-e1446858221815.png 618w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-9-Gurung-kids-to-succeed-response-e1446858221815-300x127.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I know he missed it because, not long after that, he came up with this comment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-8.1-have-a-story-only.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"595\" height=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-8.1-have-a-story-only.png\" alt=\"UN 8.1 have a story-only\" class=\"wp-image-6670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-8.1-have-a-story-only.png 595w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN-8.1-have-a-story-only-300x113.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And so I spelled it out for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN10.1-Re8-dont-be-so-patronizing-only-e1446858123328.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"702\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN10.1-Re8-dont-be-so-patronizing-only-e1446858123328.png\" alt=\"UN10.1 Re8 don't be so patronizing-only\" class=\"wp-image-6672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN10.1-Re8-dont-be-so-patronizing-only-e1446858123328.png 702w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/UN10.1-Re8-dont-be-so-patronizing-only-e1446858123328-300x75.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But I doubt he got the message!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, with some high castes, they probably never even become aware that they are being patronizing because <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/putting-someone-in-their-place-nepalese-style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that&#8217;s the only language they know<\/a>. Some use language deliberately to belittle, humiliate, intimidate others and thereby, as we say in Nepali, <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/putting-someone-in-their-place-nepalese-style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;put them in their [social] place.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, structural privilege makes the privileged, according to Pramod Mishra, <a href=\"http:\/\/kathmandupost.ekantipur.com\/news\/2015-07-23\/for-the-people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conceited<\/a>. Structural privilege also <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/blinding-effect-of-structural-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blinds<\/a> the privileged to their <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/what-is-privilege-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">privileges<\/a>, privileges aptly referred to as <a href=\"http:\/\/whathasgood.com\/2013\/01\/17\/the-invisible-doko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the invisible doko<\/a> in a blog post of the same title. Most reactions however are standard and pathetic objections, knee-jerk defensive reactions, fallacy-ridden arguments about what&#8217;s wrong with the chart and why reservations (affirmative action) should NOT be implemented in Nepal etc.&nbsp;None of them new to me, of course!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I share below just three examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the following the user, no different from some others, displayed their bigotry without even being aware! In it the user psychedlic_breakfast reveals more about the kind of a person s\/he is than shedding any light on the people (the non-<em>Khas-aryas<\/em>) s\/he characterizes. If s\/he actually believes that that&#8217;s the kind of &#8220;logical&#8221; argument people make when debating inclusion and representation then s\/he has never been in such a debate or, if s\/he has, they must have been debates where fallacy-ridden arguments are made. Plus, the user wants us to believe that, without having personally &#8220;verified the accuracy of the figures&#8221; they appear &#8220;to be cherry picked&#8221;! Written by a Nepali with the surname Bhattarai (a Brahmin), what caught my eyes: &#8220;Brahmins have the highest achievement motivation[.]&#8221; I wonder if the author considered what, if anything, achievement motivation is a function of. My guess? Probably a number of variables, one of which is likely social capital! And guess which social group in the Indian Subcontinent likely has the LARGEST social capital? The Brahmains! They are after all the higest caste!
