{"id":6455,"date":"2015-10-26T11:37:48","date_gmt":"2015-10-26T05:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/?p=6455"},"modified":"2021-08-16T10:42:04","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T04:57:04","slug":"all-for-national-unity-well-maybe-not-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/all-for-national-unity-well-maybe-not-all\/","title":{"rendered":"All for National Unity&#8230; Well Maybe Not&#8230; All!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We in Nepal believe that horns and the caste system are God&#8217;s gift to us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why we have given &#8220;tooting ones horn&#8221; a whole <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/horn-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new meaning<\/a>. That&#8217;s why we have created a <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/horn-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">million and one use<\/a> of the accessory <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/the-best-i-have-heard-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to keep the ears of people on the roads of Nepal on their toes<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wholeheartedly adopting fatalism, an attitude endorsed and engendered by the caste system, is it any wonder then that we have developed our very own carefree attitude of you-only-live-once-so-live-free-and-die-doing-so towards <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/use-your-head-protect-your-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">road safety<\/a>?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caste system, our hallowed social system, has a long and enduring history going all the way back to 1854 when it was made into <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/human-rights-and-education-of-marginalized-nepalese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the law of the land<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviating the need for people to waste their precious time figuring out <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/in-the-search-is-the-discovery-and-the-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who they are<\/a> and what they are supposed to do with their lives; obviating the need to expend time and energy into that wasteful endeavor of <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/for-a-meaningful-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">making life meaningful<\/a> &#8212; the caste system gave that to all of us Nepalese on a silver platter, figuratively speaking, of course &#8212; freeing us to concentrate on doing just that which keeps and maintains our God-given, and when necessary, God-maintained, grand social order. (Should it crumble, God Vishnu, the Sustainer of Life and Social Order, will return as an <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avatar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avataar<\/a><\/em> to restore it!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While, in the southern plains, there might still be some ongoing protests against the constitution <a href=\"http:\/\/kathmandupost.ekantipur.com\/news\/2015-09-20\/president-promulgates-constitution-of-nepal-2072.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promulgated on September 20<\/a>&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While those protests may have already claimed about 45 lives according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2015\/10\/16\/we-are-not-nepali\/protest-and-police-crackdown-terai-region-nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Rights Watch report<\/a>&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the earthquake victims&#8217; resilience are still being tested <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/asia\/nepal-earthquake-six-months-on-from-the-countrys-double-cataclysm-the-survivors-tell-their-stories-a6706652.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six months on<\/a> for the rest of the world to extol&#8230;while our illustrious leaders continue to do <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/category\/bureaucracy-corruption-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">everything&#8230;they always do and can do<\/a>&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the unofficial economic blockade of the country by India may be testing the resilience of the rest of the population of the country&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should never forget the trump card of our nation: unity in diversity. The foundation and basis for that diversity and therefore unity, the amazing glue that holds our nation together, is of course no other than &#8212; you guessed it! &#8212; our caste system!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must do everything we can to keep that unique cultural heritage of ours alive. When you alone share more than 100 will see.<\/p><p>Please share as much as possible for national unity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Incidentally, the translator wishes to remain anonymous. I made some changes to it and as such any mistake is probably mine!)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I felt it a travesty that it excluded the specialty of <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/tag\/dalit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dalits<\/a>! They put clothes on everyone&#8217;s back, shoes on everyone&#8217;s feet, and utensils in everyone&#8217;s kitchen etc.!<\/p><p>At social functions, while everyone else is expected to mingle together, they get to sit and eat by themselves, in private, without others intruding in their space.<\/p><p>Just because you can&#8217;t do any of that, should you be jealous?! Should you steal their sewing machines etc. out of envy for their skills?! Should you force the Dalits to inter-migle with everyone else at every function?! Should you demand that the country create an environment where everyone from a Bahun to a Gurung is also able to do everything Dalits are able to do?! That&#8217;s ridiculous!<\/p><p>Every place and every group of people in our country is unique and have their own specialty.
