I have also <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/universidad-iberoamericana-human-rights-education-of-the-marginalized-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spoken<\/a> about it at a number of different venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/women-not-wee-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poverty<\/a> and our <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/universidad-iberoamericana-human-rights-education-of-the-marginalized-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">culture and tradition<\/a> making life very very difficult for girls and women, driving an unhealthy number of them to choose <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-silenced-go-silently\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">death over life,<\/a> the constitution promulgated last year on September 20, blatantly discriminates against women on the rights to pass on citizenship to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reproduced below are a series of informative and very well made Nepali version of the info-graphs produced by Supriya Manandhar and her friends, about the provision, which originally appeared on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/9ToGo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imgur<\/a>. I am reproducing them here with permission from Supriya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Versions in other languages spoken in the country are on the way. After all, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/unstats.un.org\/unsd\/demographic\/sources\/census\/2010_phc\/Nepal\/Nepal-Census-2011-Vol1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2011 census report<\/a>, less than half &#8212; 44.6% &#8212; of the population speak Nepali as mother tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(For the English version, <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/nepalese-constitution-2072-discrimination-against-women-on-citizenship-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"imgur-embed-pub\" lang=\"en\" data-id=\"a\/9ToGo\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/9ToGo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizenship Provisions in Constitution 2072 (In Nepali)<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/s.imgur.com\/min\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The following Al Jazeera video made by my friend Subina features a Constituent Assembly member who justifies the discriminatory provision by saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Citizenship system in principal and practice is not the same in every country. It depends on the circumstances, legal provision and geopoliticis of different countries. So there should be no question at all how the Nepali people and Nepali state adopts the legal provision. There is no universal principle applicable to all countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Nepal&amp;rsquo;s constitution make many children of Nepali women stateless\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/139903263?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing the video on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dorje.gurung.73\/posts\/10153637926682095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, to clarify what he meant, I had commented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">&#8220;What he means by &#8220;Nepali people&#8221; above is Nepali men, mostly <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/there-is-poor-representation-and-then-there-is-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hill so-called high caste Hindu men<\/a>, [roughly 10% of the population, if at that] NOT exactly Nepali people.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education, more than anything, has the potential to change this and that&#8217;s why <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/category\/projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I do what I do<\/a>. Education will bring awareness, and then changes in attitudes and mentality and subsequently, changes in behavior.
