{"id":7619,"date":"2016-03-10T22:19:11","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T16:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/?p=7619"},"modified":"2026-03-13T22:16:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T22:16:43","slug":"could-i-ask-you-to-be-a-little-more-social-for-a-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/could-i-ask-you-to-be-a-little-more-social-for-a-cause\/","title":{"rendered":"Could I Ask You to Be a Little More Social for a Cause?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"629\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/social-media.jpg\" alt=\"social media\" class=\"wp-image-7838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/social-media.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/social-media-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/social-media-1024x537.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/social-media-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Had it not been for social media, I might have been languishing in a Qatari jail right now <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/qatar-from-afar-121212\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">serving a seven-year jail sentence<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/qatar-from-afar-mayday-mayday-may-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">allegedly insulting Islam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media also helped with the success of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/edufreenepal-campaign-final-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fundraising campaign<\/a>&nbsp;in May\/June 2013, funds with which we were able to provide considerable help to Raithane School in Thangpalkot. (Our annual reports of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/committeds-annual-report-fiscal-year-2013-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2013-14<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/committeds-annual-report-for-fiscal-year-2014-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014-15<\/a>&nbsp;details how and where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/edufreenepal-campaign-final-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the funds<\/a> were used.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media also ensured the success of a number of other&nbsp;fundraising efforts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-to-send-iju-to-uwc-maastricht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to send Iju to UWC in Holland<\/a>\u00a0in 2014<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to raise funds for <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/uwc-scholarship-fundraisers\/2015-uwc-scholarship-fundraiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 UWC candidates<\/a>\u00a0who otherwise wouldn&#8217;t have been able to go<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/casualty-of-qatar-shattered-dream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to help Bishnu and her siblings continue with their education<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-i-want-to-be-a-nurse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to help Prakriti to attend Nursing School in Kathmandu<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/sponsorships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to provide scholarships for some Raithane school children<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/sponsorships\/two-taltules-of-taltuleswory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to provide scholarships for two Taltuleshwori School children<\/a>\u00a0etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Had it not been for social media, COMMITTED and I wouldn&#8217;t have been as successful with some of the awareness campaigns we were involved in,&nbsp;notably,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/were-committed-a-fundraiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We&#8217;re COMMITTED<\/a>, which spawned a fundraising drive in <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-art-exhibition-in-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York City<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-sydneys-committed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sydney<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-run-to-stop-child-trafficking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Run to Stop Child Trafficking<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media (mostly Twitter) helped with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/casualty-of-qatar-17-years-of-yearning-for-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the campaign<\/a> to return Roshan <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/the-beginning-of-the-end-to-a-17-year-yearning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">home to his family<\/a> within a month after being stuck in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-nepal-qatar-ambassador-idUSBRE98P10O20130926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;open jail&#8221;<\/a> of Qatar for thirteen years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am sure social media also had a big hand promoting our work and contributed to the funds we raised as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-for-relief-and-rebuilding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Earthquake Relief Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(In my efforts to raise awareness about the earthquake and the destruction it caused, to promote the work COMMITTED is doing, to establish long-term relationships with institutions and organisations in the US and to help raise as much funds as possible, I have also been speaking at different <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/a-whirlwind-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">venues in the US<\/a> since May last year.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, COMMITTED has not raised enough to rebuild&nbsp;the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/school-profiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five schools in Thangpalkot<\/a>. Following the earthquake, we have raised considerably more money than in previous years, but we have been involved in emergency relief as well details of which you can find in our <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/committeds-annual-report-for-fiscal-year-2014-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014-15 Annual Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/commmitted-needs-your-help-please-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last blog post<\/a> on this topic, I made a plea asking well wishers and supporters to share our story on social media. In this one, I would like to make a number of social media-related requests of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facebook<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please &#8216;Like&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cminepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMMITTED&#8217;s Facebook Page<\/a> and keep abreast of our work AND share posts to help us reach a wider audience. We currently have a little over 1010 likes. It would be great if we can raise that number to 2000!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/CMI.nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMMITTED&#8217;s Facebook Group<\/a>. Currently, we have 1200 members. It would again be great to increase the membership to 2000 as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please &#8216;Like&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dorjes.dooing73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorje&#8217;s Dooing Facebook Page<\/a>. It has just a little over 900 likes now. Again, it would great to raise that number to 2000!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And if you have already &#8216;liked&#8217; those pages, invite your friends to also &#8216;like&#8217; them as well (see image). most importantly &#8212; share and &#8216;Like&#8217; or &#8216;+1&#8217; or retweet our posts on Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. to promote us and our work and help us reach a wider audience and, possibly, donors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">Without more <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/fundraising\/a-fundraiser-for-relief-and-rebuilding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funding<\/a>, we can do little for <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/cold-fronts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the children of Thangpalkot<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Facebook, you may have noticed that the default setting for the News Feed you see from your friends is Top Stories, i.e. the posts that have received the most shares and\/or &#8216;Likes.&#8217;
