(The screenshot was taken yesterday.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above post, yesterday morning, gave me a laugh, reminding me yet again of the ridiculousness of the &#8220;debate&#8221; over the birthplace of Buddha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time I became aware of the &#8220;drive&#8221; of the Nepalese to &#8220;prove&#8221; or &#8220;reaffirm&#8221; that Buddha &#8212; Gautam Buddha, the historical Buddha &#8212; was born in Nepal was way back in 2013. At the time, I was living in Qatar but <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/travel-murphys-law-rules-supreme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">came home every single break<\/a>. I have seen many Facebook campaigns as well. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As matter of fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/search\/str\/buddha%2Bwas%2Bborn%2Bin%2Bnepal\/keywords_pages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">search for &#8220;Buddha was born in Nepal&#8221;<\/a> on the social media yielded roughly 300 hits!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many this appears to be an issue of national pride, hence Prashant&#8217;s call on the <em>rashtrabaadis<\/em> (nationalists) to fight over it, partly in jest I am sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">I have no issue with people taking pride in Buddha&#8217;s birth place being their own&nbsp;country. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I confess I myself have, in the past, corrected people who thought Buddha was born elsewhere. After all, the history I had learned in Nepal had told me so. (Of course, Nepalese history is filled with&nbsp;holes and a lot of&nbsp;it was propaganda. For instance, it excluded most of the people of the country, but that&#8217;s another story all together.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">I also have no issue with people taking pride in their (birth) country either.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Though, I have yet to hear a convincing argument for it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">Regardless, the way my countrymen think about and treat the Madhesis, those living along the southern plains &#8212; Buddha&#8217;s birth place &#8212; I find a little lacking and telling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent maligning of the Madhesis on social media and elsewhere by other Nepalese, was precipitated by <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/kathmandu-driving-and-parking-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their protests against the constitution<\/a>, made worse by the &#8220;unofficial&#8221; Indian economic embargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many in Kathmandu vociferously decried their loss of <strong>some<\/strong> of their conveniences and the disruptions to their cushy and comfortable lives.&nbsp;Furthermore, they were quick to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/kathmandu-driving-and-parking-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blame the Madhesis<\/a>, for the loss of, according to them, their rights &#8212; most of which were really&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/what-is-privilege-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">privileges<\/a>&nbsp;they had enjoyed throughout the modern history of the country mostly&nbsp;<strong>at the expense of the rest of the people<\/strong>&nbsp;(such as those in Madhes and elsewhere, including Kathmandu). Few appeared to blame&nbsp;the <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/cold-fronts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ineffective government<\/a>, the political leaders and the <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/category\/bureaucracy-corruption-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">corrupt<\/a> political and economic <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/there-is-poor-representation-and-then-there-is-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">power structure<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;Kathmandu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nationalists and ultra-nationalists were quick to even disown the Madhesis saying that they are really Indians and NOT Nepalese. Much was made of the heritage of the Madhesis &#8212;&nbsp;for their cultural and ethnic ties to their neighbors across the border.&nbsp;The mainstream media joined the bandwagon either failing to provide adequate and fair coverage or, when providing coverage, publishing <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/is-media-in-kathmandu-as-one-sided-as-they-appear-and-what-of-the-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unbalanced reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vilification of Madhesis on social media alone is quite appalling. For instance, on Facebook there are at least 116 profiles and pages about <em>Dhotis<\/em>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1yPrOH6Bp3S0y1sBSoihSno8g7OTcGM8pI3bk_gutVFQ\/edit?pref=2&amp;pli=1#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> to view one of the two lists and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/12XTywahBxP7IA0HYdTYCJqKw9SFicNLkDYSySq4GHzU\/edit?pref=2&amp;pli=1#gid=136954063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> for the other.) <em>Dhoti<\/em> in Nepali denotes the attire worn by men of Indian heritage. It is also an ethnic slur used to refer to people of Indian heritage, i.e. both people of India and people indigenous to the southern plains of Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can argue that all the profiles and pages are NOT about Nepalese <em>Dhotis<\/em> (and therefore not discriminatory against fellow citizens)&nbsp;and that&nbsp;some are about Indian <em>Dhotis<\/em> (and therefore nationalistic).&nbsp;I, however, am not going there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">But&#8230;of course&#8230;&#8221;Buddha was born in Nepal.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The irony, not lost on me, I pointed it out in a Facebook post way back in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dorje.gurung.73\/posts\/10153720362757095\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8060 noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"627\" height=\"698\" src=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FB-post-where-was-buddha-born.jpg\" alt=\"FB post where was buddha born\" class=\"wp-image-8060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FB-post-where-was-buddha-born.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FB-post-where-was-buddha-born-269x300.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Where was Buddha born? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dorje.gurung.73\/posts\/10153720362757095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> or on the image to go to the original post.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But of late, a neighbor we have a longstanding love-hate relationship with &#8212; as happens between all &#8220;good neighborly&#8221; countries in every continent &#8212; India has become &#8220;Enemy Number 1&#8221;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country (<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/kathmandu-driving-and-parking-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some argue as being only partly<\/a>) responsible for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-35041366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very costly<\/a>, recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/kathmandu-driving-and-parking-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economic embargo<\/a>;\u00a0the country many in Kathmandu see as\u00a0meddling in our internal affairs by attempting to influence amendments to the constitution promulgated six months ago; the country, which, following our PM Oli&#8217;s very recent visit, <a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/business\/budget\/budget-2016-days-after-oli-visit-40-cut-in-aid-to-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduced their development aid by 40%<\/a> &#8212; has now claimed that Kapilvastu, <a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/lucknow\/Kapilvastu-was-in-India-Proof-out\/articleshow\/51433710.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the birthplace of Buddha, is in India<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">Will that mean the rebirth of the&nbsp;#BackOffIndia campaign?! \ud83d\ude42&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jokes aside, by all means take pride in having been born in the same country\/region as the Buddha because, really, as far as I can tell, that&#8217;s what &#8220;Buddha was born in Nepal&#8221; campaign really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">But, as you may already have gathered, where Buddha was born, i.e. the nationality of Buddha as it were (!), is of little to no significance whatsoever.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(All this debate over where he was born is probably making Buddha turn in his grave&#8230;figuratively speaking of course&#8230;I mean&#8230;you know what I mean!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">What should matter first&nbsp;is Buddha was born and second is his <em>Dharma<\/em>, his teachings.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">How about we put his teachings&nbsp;to practice and become as close to Buddha, the Enlightened One, in words and deeds as we are to his birth place?!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Nepal: Naam ma chai Buddha ko janma sthal, kaam ma chai?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Dorje Gurung (@Dorje_sDooing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dorje_sDooing\/status\/697117077186940929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 9, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(&#8220;Nepal: In name the birth place of Buddha, in deed?&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important of his teachings or doctrines, for example, is the principle of&nbsp;<em>ahimsa<\/em>&nbsp;(&#8220;not to harm\/non-violence\/compassion&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How about we practice <em>ahimsa<\/em>&nbsp;by viewing and treating everyone &#8212; from the <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/the-local-people-should-improve-the-quality-of-their-lives-but-let-them-not-wear-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhotes in the mountains<\/a>&nbsp;to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ekantipur.com\/the-kathmandu-post\/2015\/07\/01\/oped\/the-country-is-yours\/277933.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tamangs<\/a>,&nbsp;Bahuns, Gurungs, Chhettris, Dalits etc. in the hills to the Dhotis (<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/rosenfield-program-human-rights-and-education-of-marginalized-people-of-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tharus<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/caste-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dums<\/a> etc.) in the Southern Plains &#8212; as being in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/the-science-of-empathy-and-buddhism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same boat<\/a>&nbsp;and therefore Nepalese?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, how about we work to provide opportunities for personal, social, economic and political advancement of&nbsp;those <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/universidad-iberoamericana-human-rights-education-of-the-marginalized-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">historically marginalized<\/a>, such as&nbsp;the Madhesis, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nepalitimes.com\/blogs\/thebrief\/2015\/07\/05\/the-tamang-epicentre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tamangs<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-silenced-go-silently\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women<\/a> etc.?
