It&#8217;s possible however that the person, rather than being clueless, created this to appeal to a Nepalese audience that s\/he knows well! Or,&nbsp;there maybe a completely different explanation for why the individual might have created a meme that&#8217;s obviously so wrong!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, to begin with, is the translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In a country where Kalyan Shrestha, the son of a Newar [a <em>Janjati<\/em>], is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, tell me, where&nbsp;is ethnicity-based discrimination? In a country where the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ram_Baran_Yadav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">son of a Yadav<\/a> [a Madhesi] can be a President, tell me,&nbsp;where is ethnicity-based discrimination? In a country where the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subash_Chandra_Nembang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">son of a Nembang<\/a> [a <em>Janjati<\/em>] becomes&nbsp;the Speaker of The House, tell&nbsp;me, where is ethnicity-based discrimination? A son of a Bahun [high caste] slogs it out in 50 degree heat in the Gulf, how is he a member of the country&#8217;s ruling class? Friends, put your efforts into improving your skills instead of being envious of others. When you were of school-going age you wasted your time playing marbles and other such games, smoking weed and cigarettes, teasing young girls and failing in several subjects and now you kick up a stink because you can&#8217;t&nbsp;get a high-ranking post in the government? Let&#8217;s not get into such posts by begging for affirmative action but through earned qualification and proven ability!!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">Of course the logic is completely off &#8212; you cannot make such a gross generalisation from one single example!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One example does not make a rule; one exception does not break a rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chief_Justice_of_Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kalyan Shrestha<\/a>, the current Chief Justice, might be a <em>Janjati<\/em>\u00a0and not a hill so-called high caste Hindu &#8212; a <em>Khas<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Khas Arya<\/em>\u00a0(a Bahun or a Chhetri). But, how many of the supreme court justices, to date, have NOT been\u00a0<em>Khas<\/em>? <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/there-is-poor-representation-and-then-there-is-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Only 22%<\/a>, a minority!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/kantipur.ekantipur.com\/news\/2016-03-28\/20160328085544.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Kantipur<\/em>&nbsp;article<\/a>&nbsp;published today and written by a Bahun,&nbsp;former Chief Election Commissioner&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/np.linkedin.com\/in\/bhojrajpokharel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhoj Raj Pokharel<\/a>, the combined representation of non-<em>Khas-Arya<\/em>&nbsp;in a number of government executive bodies is only 24%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-<em>Khas&nbsp;<\/em>made up <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/there-is-poor-representation-and-then-there-is-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only between 5 and 33%<\/a>&nbsp;of Prime Ministers, Chief District Officers, the last Council of Ministers and Bar Association office bearers, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/nepal-no-country-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The percentage of women have been even smaller<\/a>. Pokharel finds women&#8217;s representation to be <a href=\"http:\/\/kantipur.ekantipur.com\/news\/2016-03-28\/20160328085544.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only 6%<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, a majority of them are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/nepal-no-country-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Khas<\/em> men<\/a>&nbsp;who&nbsp;make up roughly 15% of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason is structural inequality inherent in our society which disproportionately benefits <em>Khas<\/em> men, giving them&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/what-is-privilege-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">considerable structural privileges<\/a>. Structural inequality has been &#8212; and continues to be&nbsp;&#8212; maintained by the privileged through systemic and institutional discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[bctt tweet=&#8221;Structural inequality inherent in our society disproportionately benefits Khas men.&#8221; username=&#8221;Dorje_sDooing&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That however does NOT mean that ALL <em>Khas<\/em> people are privileged AND NO ONE from the rest of&nbsp;the population is at all.&nbsp;Neither does that mean that ALL <em>Khas<\/em> people are wealthier than the rest of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, not all structurally privileged are wealthy nor are the rest all poor. That&#8217;s why you can find poor&nbsp;<em>Khas<\/em>&nbsp;men slogging &#8220;it out in 50 degree heat&#8221; in the Gulf just as you can find <a href=\"http:\/\/kathmandupost.ekantipur.com\/news\/2015-07-23\/for-the-people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highly successful and extremely wealthy non-<em>Khas<\/em>&nbsp;Nepalese<\/a>&nbsp;in Australia, Russia etc. Heck, absolute numberwise, we most likely have more poor <em>Khas<\/em> people than poor Dalits!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">BUT of course the existence of poor high-caste Hindus is NOT evidence for the absence of systemic and institutional discrimination of <em>Janjatis<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/social-justice-caste-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalits<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/buddha-was-born\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madhesis<\/a>,&nbsp;to say nothing of <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-silenced-go-silently\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discrimination of women<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">(In the Nepal this person appears to live, women don&#8217;t seem to even exist, not unlike in <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/all-for-national-unity-well-maybe-not-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a similar meme I wrote a satirical piece about<\/a>! How else do you explain examples involving only sons?! \ud83d\ude09 Telling, isn&#8217;t it? )<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After going to such length to argue how there is no systemic and institutional discrimination in the\u00a0country, towards the end, the creator tells us what s\/he thinks\u00a0of the non-<em>Khas<\/em>\u00a0Nepalese. Nepalese not belonging to the ruling caste\/class, to the creator of the meme, is &#8230; a low life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In characterising others that way, this person unwitting has outed himself\/herself, ironically, as a&nbsp;bigot!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[bctt tweet=&#8221;The existence of poor Khas-Aryas is NOT evidence for absence of discrimination.&#8221; username=&#8221;Dorje_sDooing&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the call to apply oneself to get qualifications and acquire skills to make it into the power structure of the country instead of by &#8220;begging for affirmative action&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, there is only an allusion to the hill so-called high caste Hindus being more qualified (educated) and skilled than others. I have encountered such arguments in the past&nbsp;&#8212; that Bahuns are <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/a-graph-is-worth-a-thousand-words-it-seems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more educated and\/or competitive<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/blinding-effect-of-structural-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">considerably more hard&nbsp;working<\/a> &#8212; as well as the argument that hill so-called high caste Hindus are <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/blinding-effect-of-structural-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more &#8220;deserving&#8221;<\/a> of such posts. I find that very intriguing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s assume for argument&#8217;s sake that the <em>Khas-Aryas<\/em>&nbsp;in general are <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/a-graph-is-worth-a-thousand-words-it-seems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highly qualified<\/a> and competent, especially those who run the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">Then, how come we still have such a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/where-everything-goes-and-nothing-goes-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dinosaurian bureaucracy<\/a>?!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">And, how come we are still one of the least developed countries in the world?!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sad irony is that, government posts in Nepal are some of the cushiest jobs you can get through connection (&#8220;<em>afno manche<\/em>&#8220;),&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/kissing-ass-could-mean-sitting-on-your-asses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ass kissing<\/a>, patronage and nepotism, i.e. social capital, which the structurally privileged have in abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">The non-<em>Khas<\/em> Nepalese, on the other hand, lacking in social capital, have limited opportunities to compete for those&nbsp;posts regardless of their qualifications and skills.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words the disproportionately high representation of the <em>Khas-Aryas<\/em> in positions of power is achieved by the <em>Khas-Aryas<\/em>&nbsp;&#8220;reserving&#8221; those positions of power for themselves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image below, taken from the article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/mediadiversified.org\/2013\/09\/12\/the-blueprint-of-structural-inequality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Structure of Structural Inequality<\/a>&#8220;, neatly summarises the history of race-relations in the US. Look closely enough and you&#8217;ll see that it provides some insight into the nature of the ingrained systemic and institutional discrimination in&nbsp;Nepal. If you watch the video, I am sure you&#8217;ll be able to draw parallels without too much effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s sad to see is that, in spite of the meme getting the logic and the characterisation of fellow Nepalese so completely wrong, it has&nbsp;appealed to &#8212; and misinformed &#8212; a sizeable Nepalese Facebook users. The last time I checked, it had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=717672841678067&amp;set=a.323921217719900.67254.100003060726707&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared over seven thousand times<\/a> with a vast majority of those I read agreeing with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(This isn&#8217;t the first Nepali meme I have written about. In another <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/all-for-national-unity-well-maybe-not-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">satirical post<\/a>, I poke fun at the&nbsp;meme pitching the ultra-nationalists&#8217; call for&nbsp;&#8220;Unity in Diversity.&#8221;&nbsp;Having noticed Nepalese struggling to make logical arguments, I also wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/blinding-effect-of-structural-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a blog<\/a>&nbsp;in which I argued that our curriculum should include philosophy.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the chances that this blog post will reach even a fraction of those that the meme must have reached? Small!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, it&#8217;s important to put out and share information such as this. Information such as this discussing the kind of discourses we are having about the ills of our society, such as systemic and institutional discrimination and how it affects everyone, not just the victims,&nbsp;generates&nbsp;awareness and understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least, that&#8217;s my belief anyway.&nbsp;What do you think? Written by a Nepali with the surname Bhattarai (a Brahmin), what caught my eyes: &#8220;Brahmins have the highest achievement motivation[.]&#8221; I wonder if the author considered what, if anything, achievement motivation is a function of. My guess? Probably a number of variables, one of which is likely social capital! And guess which social group in the Indian Subcontinent likely has the LARGEST social capital? The Brahmains! They are after all the higest caste!
