Luckily for me, a teacher at this public school recognized my potential, and told my dad to put me in a private school in Kathmandu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide03-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide03-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide03 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide03-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide03-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide03-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After being shuttled from one public school to another in Pokhara, I found myself enrolled at St. Xavier\u2019s Godavari School.&nbsp;My parents could afford to send me there as the Jesuits subsidized the fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The high quality education I was receiving as a primary school student, when in grade 5, made me realize &#8212; and decide &#8212; that <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/education-in-nepal-how-i-in-and-got-out-of-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">education would be my ticket out of poverty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My motivation and drive to succeed and my dedication to my studies paid off when I won a <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/my-potholed-road-to-uwc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full scholarship to the United World College of the Adriatic<\/a>, an international school in Italy, and then admission to Grinnell College with also a pretty much 100% financial aid package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following my studies, I had a professional career as an international teacher for over 15 years, teaching in ten different countries, including Nepal, spread over five continents, and travelling to about three dozen other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My life story however is an exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A majority of Nepalese belonging to marginalized groups like myself and possibly even like many of you, and others, notably the Dalits, women, Tharus and Tamangs, don\u2019t get anywhere near as much opportunities in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IN THE&nbsp;rest of the talk, I will be doing a number of things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide04-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide04-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide04 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide04-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide04-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide04-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I will firstly be providing details of how these marginalized Nepalese suffer both at home and abroad because of violation of some of their most basic human rights,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, I will be describing what education is like in Nepal, a lot of which you might already know, to show you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How and why quality education will help marginalized Nepalese, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally what COMMITTED, the non-profit organization I run with my friend Jayjeev, does with education to help free themselves.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">I know quality education will make the difference to others from backgrounds similar to mine, like many of you, because it made all the difference to me!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>[Scroll down just below the Facebook comment box to navigate to the next page.]<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>SOCIAL STRUCTURE in our country has always been very hierarchical. There has always been the hierarchy of class but it is also vastly stratified owing to the Caste System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Formalized in 1854 with the promulgation of the Nepal Legal Code, the <em>Muluki Ain<\/em>, basically the Caste System, is based entirely on Hindu Orthodoxy and classifies people into five hierarchical castes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide05-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide05-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide05 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide05-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide05-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide05-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the top are the \u201cwearers of holy thread\u201d, the high castes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next are the \u201cNon-enslavable alcohol drinkers,\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then come the \u201cEnslavable alcohol drinkers,\u201d the Tamangs and people like myself from Mustang district, called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/social-justice-marked-from-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhote<\/a><\/em>, fall in this caste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fourth are the \u201cImpure but touchable\u201d ones such as the Tharus from the Southern Plains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then at the bottom are the \u201cUntouchable castes\u201d from whom the high castes cannot accept water and whose touch requires sprinkling of holy water. These are the Dalits, the occupational workers, such as the tailors, cobblers, blacksmiths etc. and <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/social-justice-caste-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">therefore unclean<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The first and the most obvious way untouchability of Dalits is enforced is through segregation of their residential area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All Dalits in a village are made to <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/social-justice-caste-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live on streets reserved just for them<\/a>, away from everyone else. The following are some of the numerous other ways their freedom and rights are curtailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide06-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide06-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide06 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide06-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide06-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide06-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are denied entry in houses, restaurants, temples and participation in, or entry into, social and public activities and functions etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are denied access to community resources, denied equal opportunities to enter labor market etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher castes expect obeisance from them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are made victims of atrocities more than others, such as rape of Dalit women.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These practices are most severe in Terai. The following video, made by my friend Subina Shrestha, a journalist for Al Jazeera, is about the victimization of one such Dalit group in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Sweeping away caste discrimination in Nepal\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cg4u89aJHOo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it any wonder then that, as a people, they have some of the lowest Human Development Indices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide08-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide08-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide08 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide08-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide08-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide08-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>WOMEN, the other marginalized group, today fare no better. The root cause of the problem is our <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-silenced-go-silently\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patriarchal society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sons are seen as the source of honor and pride for, and as future caregivers of, the family etc. and therefore provided considerably more life opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daughters on the other hand are seen as someone else\u2019s property since, when married, they go and live with, and take care of, someone else\u2019s family.&nbsp;Even the law of the land and the constitution gives more rights to men.&nbsp;For instance, a woman can inherit her parents\u2019 property only if she is single AND over thirty-five! The recent earthquake being just one example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am certain that it\u2019s our valuing the lives of our females so much less that has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-silenced-go-silently\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their biggest killer being suicide<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide14-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide14-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide14 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide14-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide14-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide14-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>MOVING ON to the next marginalized group&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tharu_people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Tharus<\/a> in Terai continue to suffer as a consequence of past injustices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tharus\u2019 poverty, in the face of discrimination and violation of their rights, is so extreme that they suffered through life as indentured laborers in their own land, referred to as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/multimedia\/video\/video-news-releases\/WCMS_074445\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kamaiya<\/em><\/a>, some forced to sell their daughters into bondage, called <em>Kamlaris<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a clip from a documentary also by my friend Subina about their plight and the practice of <em>Kamlari<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[Only scenes from the first 8 minutes, edited down to about 4 minutes, were actually used in the presentation.]&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Nepal&#039;s Slave Girls\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/161890577?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a dacade has passed since both the practices of Kamiya and Kamlaris have been outlawed. But the <a href=\"http:\/\/recordnepal.com\/wire\/trouble-in-tikapur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suffering and marginalization of the Tharus continue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[See Amnesty International&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/asa3144562016english.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Violations of Indigenous Tharus after the August 2015 Police Killings in Kailali<\/a> for more.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHAT ALL&nbsp;that has meant in the country is a <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/there-is-poor-representation-and-then-there-is-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disproportionately high representation<\/a> of not just men, but hill so-called high caste Hindu men both in civil service and private sector, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide16-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide16-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide16 SMD HR &amp; ones that constitute only 5% of the population &#8212; have held, and continue to hold, an overwhelming positions of power in the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That in spite of anti-discrimination laws being passed, first in 1963, and then in 1990.&nbsp;That in spite education being made universal in 1990.&nbsp;That in spite of the 1990 constitution being considerably more inclusive and progressive etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the rallying calls for ordinary Nepalese to join the recent ten-year civil war was the promise of a just society, based on the principles of equality, as summerized very well in the following clip from the documentary Born Polluted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[What I included in the presentation starts at the 9 min mark as video below does but only parts of the clip until the 15:37 min. mark were used in the short 3-minute clip I showed.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Communism fuelled by dehumanising Caste system in Nepal\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GBSZdEK_Y-4?start=540&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the civil war and the abolishment of the monarchy, there was considerable hope in all quarters for a more inclusive constitution to begin breaking down the inherent <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/tag\/structural-inequality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structural inequality<\/a> in our caste-based social structure and highly patriarchal society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many hoped that the new constitution would pave the way for a considerably more egalitarian, socially equitable and inclusive society.&nbsp;As we all know, the 2008 Constituent Assembly failed in its mission and was dissolved in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another round of elections were held in November 2013, and finally the constitution was promulgated last year, on September 20, which, however, disappointed many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>WOMEN, for instance, are <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/nepalese-constitution-2072-discrimination-against-women-on-citizenship-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">treated as \u201csecond class\u201d citizen still<\/a> \u2013 single women, and women married to foreign men, cannot pass on her citizenship to neither their husband nor their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide18-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide18-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide18 SMD HR &amp; The protests, which have claimed about 4 dozens lives already, are still ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHEN IT came to implementation of some of the inclusive provisions in the constitution, we still have not made much progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide20-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide20-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide20 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide20-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide20-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide20-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the hills, on the other hand, more than a year on, are still reeling from the aftermath of the biggest natural calamity to hit the country in living memory \u2013 the April 25 and May 12, 2015 earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reconstruction and rehabilitation of most of the millions directly or indirectly affected <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/on-shaky-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have not begun in earnest<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE DISCRIMINATIONS, the limitations and restrictions on the lower castes and other marginalized groups over pretty much the entire modern history of the country has continuously been widening the economic rift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in the aftermath of a 10-year civil war fought to correct it,&nbsp;following the abolishment of the monarchy to make amends,&nbsp;following the country sluggishly lurching forward for almost ten years without a constitution,&nbsp;following the unrest in the south and the economic blockade and its impact on mostly the marginalized,&nbsp;following the promulgation of the constitution the whole country had been waiting for so long,&nbsp;following the pretty much complete neglect of the demands by the agitating parties in Terai&nbsp;and following the complete and total neglect of the marginalized for over a year since the biggest natural calamity in living memory \u2013 the earthquakes of April and May 2015\u2026that rift, that economic rift, promises to widen still!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>SHACKLED BY poverty and lacking in opportunities within the country, an increasing number of our fellow marginalized Nepalese, even as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/kantipur-fm-commentary-the-price-unskilled-laborers-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the nineties<\/a>, started buying hope in the form of passage to foreign countries they knew very little about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide21-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide21-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide21 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide21-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide21-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide21-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 2011 Census Report, almost 2 million Nepalese live abroad. Half of them were from the age group 15-24. These numbers, incidentally, do not include those living in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About half a million left the country through legal channels in 2012-13 alone. Apparently about two thousand leave everyday legally.&nbsp;And since the earthquake, I am told, that numbers have increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavily leaden with debts, these semi- and unskilled poor Nepalese migrants, fall into yet another trap, one of discrimination and exploitation, and thus suffer again from violation of their rights in the destination countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qatar is one of the most popular destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I MYSELF was a migrant for over 15 years &#8212; travelling and working around the world as an international science teacher.&nbsp;In August 2011, my own movements took me to Qatar, after working in 8 different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read about, heard, and saw with my own eyes how the Nepalese and other Asian workers were mistreated in the country.&nbsp;In spite of my qualifications and experience, I wasn\u2019t spared the treatment either! I suffered from <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/qatar-from-afar-irony-of-ironies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discrimination<\/a> and even incarceration in Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/qatar-from-afar-the-un-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">words of his twelve-year old<\/a> son, a <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/qatar-from-afar-mayday-mayday-may-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Qatari father logged felony charges<\/a> against me for allegedly insulting Islam and I was jailed.&nbsp;During my time in jail, I met other Nepalese who had also been <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/qatar-from-afar-riyality-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">incarcerated on trumped up charges<\/a>. The most heart-wrenching story was that of a young man from Dang area everyone called, \u201cChotu.\u201d&nbsp;Unable to speak Arabic and without representation of any kind, he <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/edufreenepal-campaign-final-plea-and-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">did not know much of the details of his case<\/a>, including how his \u201cmurder victim\u201d even died and why he had been charged with murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While all the workers jailed on trumped up charges, like Chotu, had no help from anyone, on the 8<sup>th<\/sup> day of my own incarceration, friends of mine had Doha News and Washington Post publish my story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide22-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide22-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide22 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide22-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide22-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide22-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When friends around the world, including those from St. Xavier\u2019s School, United World Colleges, and Grinnell College picked up the stories, they rallied behind me and initiated a worldwide campaign to get me freed on human rights grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide23-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide23-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide23 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide23-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide23-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide23-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within four days of initiating it, the campaign had gotten so big that I was released. Many aren\u2019t that lucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide26-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide26-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide26 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide26-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide26-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide26-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a while now, three or four dead bodies of migrants have been arriving on average at Tribhuwan International Airport EVERY SINGLE DAY.&nbsp;The death of the breadwinner plunges the surviving family into even more of a precarious situation.&nbsp;Worst of all, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/is-a-dream-a-lie-if-it-dont-come-true\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dreams of their children<\/a>, the innocent victims, are shattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">TO ME&nbsp;it\u2019s clear, beyond any doubt, that education freed me\u2026twice: firstly from the shackles of birth in a low socio-economic background in Nepal, and secondly from a potential seven-year jail sentence in Qatar!&nbsp;And, what is also clear is that education can do the same for fellow Nepalese.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately though we still have major issues with our education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>QUALITY of public education is Nepal is very very poor. While private school results are good, public school results are abysmal.&nbsp;What\u2019s most alarming is that a vast majority of public school students fail while it\u2019s the opposite for private school students!&nbsp;I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if there is as flagrant a difference in the GPA\u2019s of students from the two kinds of school in the most recent SLC results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qualifications of the population, according to the 2011 census report are quite pitiful as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide30-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide30-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide30 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide30-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide30-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide30-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the system of education in Nepal right now, especially in public schools, it is very challenging for MOST Nepalese children to get an education that is in any way practical, forget about an education that makes them life long learners, <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/teach-for-nepal-critical-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">critical thinkers, problem solvers<\/a> etc. etc. etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just for comparison, here\u2019s what the education level of the US population looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide31-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide31-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide31 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide31-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide31-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide31-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be sure, there is a lot of work to be done when it comes to the emancipation of marginalized Nepalese.&nbsp;Policy and advocacy work on the education system of the country and the plight of semi- and unskilled migrant Nepalese for instance being only two of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other being fixing what was destroyed by the earthquakes, which has set the country back considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide32-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide32-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide32 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide32-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide32-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide32-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>16,000 public and private schools \u2013 roughly half of all schools in the country &#8212; are estimated to have been damaged by the earthquake affecting almost a million students.&nbsp;5000 completely destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the sources, the education of a million to 2.5 million students in the hills have been affected by the earthquakes.&nbsp;The education of a further 1.5 million students elsewhere were affected by the protests and blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even after more than a year, as I mentioned earlier, reconstruction has not really begun in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>LONG before my ordeal in Qatar, I had wanted to make something of myself and make a difference in the lives of others from backgrounds similar to mine through education. Just two months before my incarceration, I had decided to return home to do just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide33-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide33-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide33 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide33-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide33-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide33-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, returning to Nepal in May 2013, I was determined more than ever to help children of marginalized Nepalese realize their dreams, through quality education.&nbsp;One does not necessarily need lots of expensive and fancy resources for that, not in rural Nepal anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide34-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide34-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide34 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide34-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide34-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide34-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Community Members Interested (COMMITTED), we work directly with communities suffering from low quality education and significant migration to urban centers within the country and to countries abroad, such as Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end COMMITED had been promoting the holistic and sustainable development of target communities through the establishment of <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/project-update-fishery-as-an-sbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social Business for Education (SBE) projects<\/a> \u2013 projects that also contribute to raising the quality of their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our current project site is Thangpalkot village in Sindhupalchok district. The indigenous population is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tamang_people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Tamang<\/a>, another marginalized group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide35-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide35-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide35 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide35-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide35-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide35-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to suffering from discrimination because of their lower status in the caste system, the Tamangs are also some of the poorest in the country.&nbsp;They have been exploited and subjugated by the ruling elite in Kathmandu for the last century and half!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of that exploitative practice involved the initiation of girl-child trafficking of Tamangs from the district of Sindhupalchok! As you may have guessed, they still suffer from that because of poverty and lack of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because of poverty, Sindhupalchok suffered the most casualties in the April earthquake. Almost a third of all deaths occurred in the district! The village of Thangpalkot lost all but 6 of the 600 houses!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Destruction of homes in Sindhupalchok ranges from 88 to 95% depending on the sources. That of course is not surprising when the foundations of their houses are thus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide36-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide36-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide36 SMD HR &amp; Ed\" class=\"wp-image-9566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide36-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide36-SMD-HR-Ed-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide36-SMD-HR-Ed-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the earthquake, COMMITTED has had to take a few steps back with our Social Business for Education project.&nbsp;We are now engaged in reconstruction.&nbsp;We have <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/project-update-taltuleshwori-school-resumes-regular-classes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">completed the reconstruction<\/a> of one of the schools we work with and are assisting two others and <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/project-update-kumveshwori-school-a-school-in-difficulty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fundraising for a fourth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have also been implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/sponsorships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sponsorship programs<\/a> supporting children from marginalized communities, vulnerable to exploitation, such as Dalit children, girls and <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/sponsorships\/bishnus-dream-lives-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">children of dead migrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide37-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Slide37-SMD-HR-Ed.jpg\" alt=\"Slide37 SMD HR &amp;
