(You can find photos from the symposium&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dorje.gurung.73\/posts\/10154352199897095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.) The symposium was one of a few different events leading up to the 2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darnalaward.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darnal Award for Social Justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the speakers there was Professor Sukhadeo Thorat. The Professor&#8217;s&nbsp;brief bio in the information pamphlet about the symposium, reads thus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>[He] is the Chairman of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. Since 2014, he has been associated with Jawaharlal Nehru Univeristy as Professor Emeritus. He was a professor of economics at JNU, chairman of University Grant Commission, and Director of Indian Institute of Dalit Studies. He has been honored with the Padmashree Award by the Government of India and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Ratna Award by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He presented the issues <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/tag\/dalit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dalits<\/a>, the lowest of the lowest castes, in Nepal face and some of the remedies. But until such time, we&#8217;ll have to continue fighting for the rights &#8212; some of them just <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/smd-human-rights-education-of-marginalized-nepalese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">really really basic BASIC rights<\/a> &#8212; of Dalits as well as the rest of&nbsp;the historically marginalized and disenfranchised citizens of the country, all of whom, when combined together, constitute a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/there-is-poor-representation-and-then-there-is-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">majority of the population<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">References:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.darnalaward.org\/2016\/08\/caste-discrimination-stronger-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caste discrimination stronger in Nepal<\/a>.
