Here&#8217;s a video of the demonstration performed in front of the concerned students themselves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"IB1 The Green Volcano\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5C0bCd4qbn0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge was for them to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the chemical, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide an explanation for the\u00a0process, supported by\u00a0a balanced chemical equation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>By this time, the students had covered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorjegurung.com\/chemistry\/IB_year2\/Redox.htm\">Redox Reactions<\/a>. They would have also learned about the general color of compounds of different groups of elements. Just the appearance of two compounds involved &#8212; the reactant and one of the products &#8212; would have given them some clues as to the identity of the reactant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, just one visible and solid product, would have also hinted at one or more products invisible to the eye, and therefore possibly one (or more) being a colorless gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15pt\">Making observations and deductions from them such as the ones here, are valuable skills in any field\/subject not just science, of course. Exercises\/activities such as these help develop and hone those skills.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this particular activity, there is a solution, a correct answer. Both the Beauties and Brawns <a href=\"https:\/\/dorjegurung.com\/sciblog\/teach-to-learn-learn-to-teach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found the answer<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Challenge number 5.
